Pretoria, 17 September 2014 - Airbus Helicopters Southern Africa (AHZA) celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new name and enhancements to its customer service offerings.
The company was initially established as Eurocopter Southern Africa Ltd, but adopted its new identity earlier this month, reflecting its status as a wholly-owned unit of Airbus Helicopters, the rotor-wing business of the Airbus Group, the world-leading aerospace & defence company.

AHZA CEO, Arnaud Montalvo said the company’s focus was on delivering comprehensive customer support services that reflected the Airbus Helicopter ethos. “Airbus is known worldwide for safe, reliable, top quality and competitive products. AHZA is committed to supporting our customers and operators with the best support and services”.

AHZA supports over 250 helicopters in service with more than 60 operators throughout Southern and Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean islands. The company also provides
training for air crew, engineers, technicians and mechanics at its main base at Grand Central Airport, which is conveniently located midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

AHZA also has the capacity to support its customers at its Cape Town International Airport and at Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.

The company also operates Africa’s only full-motion Super Puma flight simulator, which is located near Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport.

Lean processes for improved turnaround

The Grand Central base is also home to AHZA’s aircraft assembly, customization, repair and overhaul centre. “A key development that will benefit operators is our implementation of a new predictive spares supply system. This will ensure that our depot carries stocks of the appropriate parts at the right times. This is an integralelement in our adoption of smarter and leaner processes which will improve our efficiency and customer turnaround times,” explained Montalvo.

AHZA has its own approved design organization responsible for developing and undertaking approved modifications through Supplemental Type Certificates for new and existing Airbus Helicopters’ popular AS350 “Squirrel” family.

“AHZA is recognized as a centre of excellence for the region’s best-selling AS350 Squirrels and we are able to customisethese versatile helicopters for just about every conceivable mission. We perform this service not only for customers within our region, but also for a
number of operators in other parts of the world,” added Montalvo.

Regional trends

AHZA’s support capabilities are adapting to operational trends in the region, which is beginning to follow the global move from single to twin-engine machines. driven amongst
others by the development of off-shore resources exploration. It’s in harsh and demandingoperational environments that twin-engined helicopters such as the Airbus Helicopters
EC135 and EC145 are beginning to make their mark in the region,” said Montalvo.
