Mandela Day

Airbus Helicopters Southern Africa Supports Mandela Day 2016

Mandela Day serves as a global call to action for people to "recognise their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better" (Nelson Mandela Foundation).

At Airbus Helicopters Southern Africa we feel the best way to make a meaningful contribution and to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s legacy is to support the Botshabelo Children’s Home. This non-profit organization was established in 2001 to provide a caring home for orphaned childen and abandoned babies. It also provides early childhood development in the Midrand area by training teachers in the impoverished local communities.

A number of volunteers from the company put their names forward to make a contribution on the day.

The project was for the children’s playground and a classroom, in particular:

  • Painting of a class room

  • Varnishing the wooden jungle gyms

  • Fixing swings

  • Painting of swings, slides etc

In addition, staff made private donations to the home ie toys, clothes, appliances etc.

Being greeted by the children with hugs and beautiful smiles made the volunteers feel even more determined to put their best foot forward and their passion was self-evident as they worked tirelessly until the work was complete. For this we are most grateful and proud. The day was a huge success and we were pleased to have done our part in contributing to making the lives of these children a little happier, their future a little brighter and to say “we do care”.

Nelson Mandela said: "The true character of a society is revealed in how it treats its children."
